SUMMARY

The complexities of the 17th century French court are transported into London’s most posh and glamorous circles in Ranjit Bolt’s The Grouch, a modern translation of Le Misanthrope by Molière. The moody intellectual Alceste becomes Alan; as he finds himself in a world where everyone around him is lying to each other’s faces and gossiping behind everyone’s back – furthermore his special brand of brutal honesty isn’t winning him any friends. Can he truly find love in Celia, a spoiled, flirtatious socialite who epitomises everything Alan hates about society, or will Alan’s jealousy of Celia’s legions of admirers finally get the better of him? Oh, and the whole play is in rhyming couplets. What’s there not to like?
