DULOG’s annual production is always an event that is not to be missed. And this year proved to be no exception, as Anything Goes opened tonight with a mighty bang.

It’s difficult to know where to start in describing and praising the elements of this show. My personal highlight was the sleek and frankly wonderful close of the second act it left me in awe of the talent, not only on but also off stage, that we have here in Durham

At times I found myself forgetting that this was a student production, the musicians were perfect. Huge credit must go to the musical director who certainly did a fine job. Any mistakes made in this performance were easily forgiven and forgotten as the comedy workings of Moonface Martin, Reno, Lord Evelyn and Bonnie provided the room with laughter and light.

This review wouldn’t be complete if I didn’t mention the fabulous boat set design that provided the perfect setting for this piece of musical theatre. The costumes accentuated the show’s sleek and capturing nature. The choreography was beautiful and well thought out. The two lead ladies Hope and Reno were undoubtedly some of the best singers I have had the pleasure of encountering here at Durham, I simply loved their characterisation and their enthusiasm that drove the show forward. The lead male Billy slipped into the role like he had been playing it for months.

I found myself impatient as I waited for the second half to begin as I wanted so much to see more of this show. I was nervous for the start of the second act, thinking perhaps that the cast wouldn't be able to keep up the pace and success that was achieved in the first half but I’m pleased to say I was completely wrong. The second half was as good as the first and as the stories all drew to a close the play ended with a finally that was a joy to watch. It is so wonderful to see all the elements of this production come together in harmony.

All I can do is urge you to buy your tickets soon as this is sure to be a sell-out show. If you want a night of laughter, enjoyment and to encounter some of the finest talent Durham has to offer then this is the show for you!
